Bowls can be played as singles, pairs, triples or fours and the objective is to be closer to the jack (the small yellow or white target ball) than your opponent.
For each bowl closer to the jack than your opponent, you score 1 point. For example, you have 4 bowls each and 2 of your bowls are closer to the jack than your opponent's nearest bowl, this scores you 2 points.
There is more complexity to the game as you develop your skill, experience and tactical knowledge, but the above highlights the game in it's simplest form.

This is the most important shot in bowls, as it is used in 90% of game situations .

Play VideoThis is a more aggressive version of a controlled weight shot, which aims to open tightly packed heads (group of bowls around the jack) or to play an opposition's bowl for a big score.
